Specimen Type/Requirements

CytoLyt, Direct Smears, Fresh (submitted in sterile container)

Certain special stains may be precluded by presence of fixative.

 

Collection Instructions:

  1. Gather supplies:
    1. Prefilled CytoLyt containers; OR
    2. Sterile container with sterile saline (brushings only)
  2. Collection specimen.
    1. Brushings
      1. Cut brush tip off into properly labeled CytoLyt container of sterile container with sterile saline added.
      2. If additional brushings are collected from the SAME site, repeat using the same container.
      3. Use separate container for brushings from separate sites.
    2. Washings or Lavage
      1. Add specimen to properly labeled container with CytoLyt.
      2. Maintain roughly 1:1 ration specimen to CytoLyt (okay to have more fixative than specimen).

 Room Temperature     7 days with fixative; 1 day without   
 Refrigerated   7 days with fixative; 3 days without   
 Frozen  Not Acceptable
