Specimen Type/Requirements
Hologic ThinPrep Pap test vial
Note: Excessive blood, carbomer-containing lubricants, and vaginal medications are known to interfere with the processing of the specimen.
Collection Instructions:
1. Label ThinPrep Pap Test vial in presence of patient.
- Must include 2 unique patient identifiers (name, MRN, or DOB) along with the collection date and time.
2. If applicable, use gauze to gently remove blood or mucus from cervix prior to collection.
3. Obtain sample from patient using desired ThinPrep approved collection device.
4. Swish collection device in ThinPrep vial to remove cells from device.
5. Do NOT send collection device in container.
Transportation:
1. Place a properly labeled ThinPrep vial with a secure lid (align the mark on the cap with the line on the vial) in a biohazard transport bag to prevent leakage.
2. Do not place more than one vial in a biohazard bag.
3. All specimens must be submitted with the appropriate Cytology Order.
