Specimen Type/Requirements

Red top (Swab in 3 mL Universal Viral Transport Media) tube - Genital lesion, Cutaneous lesion (skin), Mucocutaneous lesion (anorectal, oral, ocular, urethral), Other lesion (tongue, throat).

 

Leave swab in media.

 

 

Use only swabs with a synthetic tip (e.g. Dacron, Rayon or Nylon) and an aluminum or plastic shaft.

Do NOT use calcium alginate swabs as they may contain substances that inhibit PCR testing.

 

Testing differentiates between Type 1 and Type 2 Herpes Simplex Virus.

 

Test is affected by gross hemolysis.  Test is not affected by lipemia.
