Specimen Type/Requirements

Orange Cap Para-Pak C&S (Cary Blair Transport Media) - Stool (Refer to Stool Collection Patient Instruction link below)

 

Sterile Container - Stool (only stable 2 hours refrigerated)

 

Note: Specify which organism is to be screened:  Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, Yersinia, Aeromonas or Plesiomonas.  Not available for Listeria.

Stability/Transport

Orange Cap Para-Pak C&S (Cary Blair Transport Media):

 Room Temperature     96 hours     Preferred for transport   
 Refrigerated     72 hours*     
 Frozen     Not Acceptable     

*Refrigerated Cary Blair samples should be processed within 24 hours for best recovery of pathogens.  However, 72 hours is compatible for other stool testing if using one specimen for multiple tests.

Additional Information

If stool is positive for E coli O157, then H7 typing will be performed.


Identification, typing, and/or sensitivity testing will be performed if indicated at an additional fee (per organism).
