Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum (preferred)
Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum (preferred)
Light Green top (Lithium Heparin w/gel) tube - Plasma
Fasting is preferred. Recent food intake may appreciably increase folate concentrations.
Serum/plasma should be separated from cells within 24 hours of collection.
Test is affected by hemolysis and gross lipemia. Hemolysis significantly increases folate values due to the high folate concentrations in red blood cells.
