Test ID PATH1012 POC/Fetal Demise/Stillborn Tissue Exam

Specimen Type/Requirements

Collect specimen in a screw-top container with a minimum formalin to specimen ratio of 10:1. 

 

DO NOT PLACE FORMALIN ON THE FOLLOWING TESTS: Frozen sections, chromosome analysis, lymphoma protocol (Flow Cytometry), crystal analysis, research, any specimen shared with microbiology for cultures.

 

Confer with genetic counselor for chromosome studies. 

 

Instructions:  

This exam is for fetuses <20 weeks gestation. For fetuses > than 20 weeks gestation, contact your local coroner. 

Stability/Transport

 Room Temperature     <1 hour (fresh, no formalin added); Indefinitely (with formalin)  Preferred for transport
 Refrigerated     fresh tissue up to 3 days  
 Frozen     Not Acceptable

Monday - Friday

Report Available

Turn around time is measured in working days from the time the specimen is accessioned into the lab. 3-6 working days depending upon specimen size and complexity. Note: stains and intra and extra-departmental consultations require additional time for report completion. When a significant delay is expected, a preliminary report will be issued. Final report to follow once all studies are completed.
