Specimen Type/Requirements

Light Green top (Lithium Heparin w/gel) tube 
Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum

Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum

 

Note:  If testing will be delayed more than 24 hours, remove serum or plasma from the clot, red blood cells, or separator gel.

 

Test is affected by moderate hemolysis and moderate lipemia.

Additional Information

Reflex Criteria:

  • If TSH is normal – no further testing.
  • If TSH is high – FT4 will be done - no further testing.
  • If TSH is low – FT4 will be done.
    • If FT4 is elevated -  no further testing.
    • If FT4 is normal or low - a FT3 will be done.
