Test ID BLOD1199 Plasma Renin Activity, Pediatric
Specimen Type/Requirements
Lavender top (EDTA) - Plasma
Collect EDTA blood (only) in a lavender-top venipuncture tube.
Mix gently by inversion.
Centrifuge immediately after collection.
Separate and freeze immediately.
It is critical that the plasma be transferred and frozen as quickly as possible to prevent cryoactivation of protein to renin (which results in falsely elevated renin levels).
This test requires its own frozen aliquot.
Note whether patient's posture was upright or supine at the time of collection.
Test is affected by hemolysis and lipemia.

Additional Information
Patient should consult their physician before being taken off medications at least three weeks prior to sample collection.
Dietary sodium levels during the period prior to testing can affect renin levels.
Sodium restriction tends to cause and increase in renin activity, while supplementation can result in lower levels.
