Gold top (Serum w/gel) tube - Serum (preferred)

Red top (Serum w/out gel) tube - Serum

Light Green top (Lithium Heparin w/gel) tube - Plasma

 

Fasting is preferred.  Recent food intake may appreciably increase folate concentrations.

 

Serum or plasma specimens to be tested for folate should be protected from light.

 

Specimen should be centrifuged and separated within 2 hours of collection.

 

Test may be affected by hemolysis, icterus and lipemia.
